Improvisation

[QUALITY PAPERBACK]
Author(s): Brad Newton
An aerobic workout for the brain, recommended by Destination Imagination! This innovative book describes 50 creative improvisational activities designed to get children’s bodies moving and their minds going. Teachers will find many uses for the activities—at the beginning or end of a lesson, or to help children review what they’ve learned. Activities can be adapted for any subject and work well for children in grades 2-12. Each activity is explained in both words and pictures.
As an example, one activity is called “Hey, taxi!” Four chairs at the front of the room represent the front and back seats of a taxi. One student acts as “driver” and sits in the front driver’s seat. A student from the class shouts, “Hey, taxi!” and goes to the “car” to get in the back seat. The teacher has pre-assigned that the two students, for example, converse in Spanish about the weather (reviewing new vocabulary they have just learned in Spanish class). After two minutes, another student calls “Hey, taxi!” and the new student rotates in, while the driver rotates out and the second student becomes the driver. The skit continues for as long as the teacher feels it is beneficial. This activity could work for any subject area to review facts, knowledge, or the application of knowledge.
